The truth: Even if the pain stops, the infection in the tooth remains. An untreated root can lead to more serious complications such as granulomas or abscesses.
Root canal treatment
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) is a procedure to save a tooth that has become inflamed or the tooth nerve has died. This condition is often accompanied by pain, sensitivity to bite or heat and sometimes swelling.
During treatment, we remove the infected part from inside the tooth, thoroughly clean the root canals and fill them with biocompatible material. The aim is to keep the tooth in the mouth, pain-free and with normal function.
Myths and truths
Answers to frequently asked questions
Myth 1: Root canal treatment is very painful.
The truth: Modern methods and local anaesthesia make the procedure almost always painless. The pain usually comes from the inflammation itself, not from the treatment.
Myth 2: Teeth don't last long after treatment.
The truth: A properly treated and well-protected tooth can remain functional for many years, sometimes even for life.
Myth 3: It's better to extract a tooth than to treat it.
Truth: It is always better to keep the tooth whenever possible. A natural tooth has a better function than any denture or implant.
Myth 4: A treated tooth darkens.
Truth: Slight discolouration can occur, but there are ways to treat it aesthetically (bleaching). This is not a necessary complication.
